Scrap the Scratchy Trend!

Teenagers, especially the girls, have got a new way of talking and it isn't pretty. They're pushing their voices down into their throats and speaking with a kind of rough, hoarse, scratchy sound. It's a sound that says "slacker", reminiscent of the sound of a pen being dragged against the spokes of a bicycle wheel.
I first heard the sound coming from the throat of my boyfriend's sixteen year old daughter. I worried that she might have some sort of medical problem requiring professional help until I heard her perform in a play. She sounded wonderful. The dry, annoying sound was gone! But then in casual conversation it was back again.
A friend of mine complained about a similar sound in her teenage daughter's voice and now I'm hearing it everywhere, I realized this harsh, almost strangled sound is deliberate. The kids think it's cool, in other words, the vocal equivalent of ripped jeans.
So what's a parent to do?
Well, I'm not a parent myself, and I admire anyone who struggles to raise happy, healthy kids. . But here's some food for thought.
Our voice is our instrument. Play it well, make a beautiful sound and you will delight and give pleasure to others. In our upside down, inverted world, beauty has become boring. The ugly, the ripped, the violent, is seen as fascinating, cool. Ugliness and violence is celebrated in the media and in the arts. There are exceptions, of course. But this is the state of our world today. Perhaps the new, cool "ugly" voice is just another symptom of a much greater social problem.
Read my book. Learn about the 6 vocal elements and how to play your voice like a finely tuned instrument. Never underestimate the difference that a little more beauty can make.
